In March 1993, three ladies in Lexington
looked into the future and foresaw the need for an organized social club for
persons moving to Lexington and surrounding Rockbridge County from out of
the area, some perhaps with no family or previous friendships here.
These persons were Lynn O'Connor, Carolyn Morgan & Ursula Keeley.
An advertisement was placed in the newspaper, and the first meeting was held
in Ursula Keeley's home, with 25 persons in attendance. Many of these
founding members are still active in the Newcomer's Club to this day!
The club's first newsletter was published in
May 1993 by Marta Kastner.
In September 1993, the first officers were
elected. Lynn O'Connor was elected President, and Lorrie Cady was
elected Vice-President.
The last meeting held in a home was at Jean
Rathmell's home. Because of the growing membership, meetings were
moved to the Howard Johnson's meeting room. Later, because of further
continued growth, our meeting venue was moved to the upstairs meeting room
at the Lexington Horse Center. Presently, the Lexington Newcomers has
over 150 members, and is the largest social club in Rockbridge County.
If you are new to this area, we invite you to join us in membership.
Share the excitement --- make some new friends!
