Interest Groups

The monthly newsletters provide additional information about Interest Groups. Interest group participants must be members of Newcomers. To join a group or for more information, contact the group leader.

We welcome suggestions and volunteers for new interest groups.

    Book Clubs
    Fourth Thursday Book Club I
This club is currently full and closed to new members for now.

    Fourth Thursday Book Club II
    Leader: Mike Quarles , 540-463-5290

The purpose of this club is to share our love of literature and enjoy the variety of literary tastes (fiction and non-fiction) brought to the table by our fellow members.

    Leader: Sharon Littley , 703-625-0870

Come roll with the Bunko ladies! We meet the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 1:00 pm. If you are interested in learning to play, we would love to teach you.

    Canasta Group
    Leader: Cynthia Tucker, 540-463-3344

Two canasta groups meet on a regular basis. One group of eight plays on the first Tuesday of the month and the other group plays on the fourth Tuesday. Hosting rotates among members. If you would like to become a substitute for one or both of the groups, or if you would like to learn, please contact Cynthia Tucker.

    Dining In/Fine Dining
    Leader: Jane Stange , 540-463-2964

Do you enjoy visiting with an intimate group of friends over a delicious meal? Then consider joining the Fine Dining Group.

As a participant you’ll be a part of three dinners during the year at members' homes. The leader coordinates the dining assignments so that at each dinner you’re eating with a new group, usually eight people at each meal. Members of Dining In should be prepared to host one time during the year. Hosts determine the menu, coordinate with their guests to chose a suitable date and time, and assign recipes for the meal.

    Dining Out
    Leader: Dorothy Coker, 540-348-6248

The Dining Out club gathers in small groups four times a year to eat at nearby restaurants. Each member is expected to host one dining out venue by setting up a reservation and notifying the leader of the details. The leader emails details to members, members respond with their top three choices, and the leader complies a list of who will dine on specific dates and locations. Each guest is responsible for the cost of his or her meal.

    Debbie Maurer , 434-922-7501
    Don Brooke , 540-280-4033
The Newcomers Hiking Group hikes every Friday weather permitting. Hikes are 3 to 6 miles and are easy to strenuous. Contact one of the hiking leaders to be on the weekly email list.
    Pinochle Club
    Leader: Marilou Schindler, 540-291-2992.

Pinochle is easier than bridge and just a little more difficult than Hearts or Spades. New players are encouraged to learn. The group meets in the afternoon on the second Wednesday of the month. Hosting rotates among members.

    Wine Tasting Group
    Leader: Barb Tyner , 703-403-3694.

The Wine Tasting Group holds tastings three times a year (March-April, June-July, and October-November). The Group’s chair selects the type of wine to be tasted and a local merchant selects six wines for the blind tastings. Each tasting is hosted by eight or so members in their homes with six to eight tasters at each location. Ratings from each hosting are shared with the leader, who compiles the scores and distributes results to members via email.

Hosts select a theme to match the type of wine and request hors d’oeuvres for guests to bring. The cost of the wine is split among guests.

    Yoga Group
    Leader: Helen Moore, 850-240-5619

The Gentle Yoga classes are held on Tuesday mornings from 8:30 to 9:30 at the Kendal Fitness Center. These classes are free to all Newcomers, so take advantage of this opportunity to introduce yourself to a lovely yoking of mind-body-spirit while enjoying the companionship of other members.

The class is appropriate to all levels, and individual needs are addressed with modifications.
